A Talk with A Table Story

We love a beautiful table setting! With the right tableware, flowers, and accessories you can create an atmosphere and tell a story before your guests even arrive – and no one tells the story better than Trine Kjær, co-founder of A Table Story, the rental service for quality tableware. Here she gives you her insights on setting the perfect table.

We are proud to have not just one but two of our candle holders in their finely curated selection. Find more inspiration on how to use our Elements and Manchet candle holders as part of your own dinner table below.

When was A Table Story founded?

The first initial idea for A Table Story came to mind in 2012 when I was getting married. I was not able to set the wedding table of my dreams with the rental possibilities available at that time.

With a background as a Furniture Designer and with a high interest in aesthetics, my solution was to buy and produce some of the tableware we wanted so it would complement the day on the same level as all other aspects of the day.

In 2014 I founded A Table Story together with Concept Designer Mette Brøndgaard after a couple of years of research and concept development.

What was the motivation behind A Table Story?

When we founded A Table Story in 2014, I worked as a designer and planned events and launches at Bang & Olufsen. Mette worked as a Concept Manager at Vipp and was responsible for hitting the market correctly whenever a new product was on the way.

The fusion of my aesthetics and Mette’s strong concept skills made the perfect match for how we should perceive and work with our company.

Two days after launching our website in 2014, a big Danish food company, Meyers, called and wanted some of our plates for a public meeting on Bornholm.

They became our first customer, and thereafter we quickly realized that we hit a spot in the market!

Who are your customers?

We work with a lot of different customers – a lot of these are private, but we see more and more companies who wish to brand themselves through a highly aesthetic table setting.

A few of the ones we frequently work with are Bestseller, Lakrids by Johan Bülow, and Social Zoo.

What is your vision?

Our vision is to be more than just a rental company. That is our core, but we also want to be much more than that. We are storytellers and stagers who add another chapter to our customer’s story: The story that is just about to play out at the private birthday party, the product launch, or the wedding.

We are curators of products where high aesthetics and functionality go hand in hand – none of the two can be without each other, and we have very high demands to every single product we take into consideration. Beauty is not enough: It also needs to be a product that you can feel the supplier has made an effort in producing.

Tell us about yourself.

I hold a Master’s Degree as a Furniture Designer and before starting A Table Story, I was in charge of designing the storytelling around Bang & Olufsen’s products at product launches and exhibitions.

I have always been a creative soul, and working with small details has always interested me. I do not settle for less, and always aim for 110 % when it comes to creating a look or concept for a customer.

Privately, I live in a house in Lyngby just outside Copenhagen with my husband, Martin, and our two sons, Nohr and Milo.

Where do you come from?

I am a Dane born in the middle of Jutland, Silkeborg, and took my education in Aarhus. After my studies, I moved to Copenhagen where Mette and I founded A Table Story.

What makes a great table setting: Do you have a manifest, a recipe, or where do you find your inspiration?
When creating a unique idea for a customer, we first and foremost listen to the customer’s visions and ideas. Often we are approached with loose thoughts, and it is our finest job to put the pieces together for a convincing and beautiful look for our customers.

We find inspiration in everything we surround ourselves with – but mostly from interior and fashion. Here you can always find waves of color, texture, and materials that set a mood or provoke a feeling which we translate into an aesthetically pleasing table setting.

What is your best advice to Table Decorators?

Be yourself – do not copy: Most people will see through it. Being yourself with your own style and preferences will give your client a much more honest result.

Although the devil is in the detail, it’s also where the magic happens. In other words: Never jump the fence, but always aim for the best result possible.
