Nordic Tales
2012 - 2023

We believe that everything around us has a tale to tell. To us, every object offers infinite narrative depth, and if you set the scene, it will unfold. We hope to spark imagination and create richer and livelier homes around the world. We strongly believe; what differs a home from a house, is your personal tales, embodied in the interior.

When we create a design, we seek to hint the Scandinavian design heritage, without repeating it. To us it is important to keep in mind where we originate, and to honor traditions – but most importantly, to make our contribution to the collective tale of Scandinavian design.

The influence of our surroundings on human emotions and psychological well-being is widely acknowledged. However, the extent to which design elements affect our mental health may be far more significant than commonly understood. At Nordic Tales, we believe that individuals subliminally perceive the intentions behind designs, which can positively impact human well-being. We argue that through the “aha-experience,” humans can sense the care and effort invested in creating products, fostering a deeper connection with their environment. This belief drives our mission to design objects that resonate with users on a profound level.

Nordic Tales' Design Approach

Our Environment

The environment in which individuals live and work significantly impacts their mental and emotional well-being. While the importance of aesthetically pleasing and functional spaces is recognized, the underlying motivations and intentions of designers may have far-reaching effects on human emotions that are not yet fully understood. At Nordic Tales, we explore the idea that humans can subliminally sense the intentions of designers and that focusing on clever solutions and beautiful objects can have a profound effect on human well-being.

The Subliminal Perception of Design Intentions

Current research suggests that humans are constantly absorbing information from their surroundings on a subconscious level.  At Nordic Tales, we believe that when individuals are surrounded by designs created primarily for profit, this intent is subconsciously detected, potentially planting seeds of discontent and negatively affecting well-being. Conversely, when designs are crafted with genuine care and consideration for the end-user, this positive intent is similarly perceived, promoting a sense of connection and satisfaction.

The Role of the Aha-Experience in Design

We believe that one mechanism through which people can sense the intentions of designers is the “aha-experience” – the moment of realization or insight that occurs when an individual appreciates the thought and care invested in a design. This experience not only fosters a deeper connection with the designed object but also reinforces the feeling of being valued and cared for. At Nordic Tales, we strive to incorporate clever solutions and prioritize beauty and aesthetics in our designs, with the aim of evoking the aha-experience in our users, resulting in positive emotional outcomes.

The
Circular Aspect

At Nordic Tales, we believe that a circular business model is essential for promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. That’s why we’re committed to designing lamps that can be disassembled without the use of tools, making it easy for our customers to dispose of the various parts of the product accordingly.

By adopting a circular business model, we’re creating a closed-loop system that promotes resource efficiency, minimizes waste, and fosters sustainability. Our commitment to designing lamps that can be easily disassembled and recycled is a key part of this effort.

We believe that a circular business model is essential for reducing waste and conserving resources. By making our lamps easy to disassemble and dispose of, we’re helping to ensure that the various parts of the product can be reused or recycled, further reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

Our decision to make our lamps easy to disassemble reflects a broader shift in the design industry towards more sustainable and responsible practices. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, they’re demanding products that are designed with sustainability in mind. By adopting a circular business model and designing lamps that can be easily disassembled and recycled, we’re meeting this demand and setting an example for other companies in the industry to follow.

Overall, we believe that a circular business model is essential for promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. By adopting this model and designing lamps that can be disassembled without tools, we’re helping to reduce waste, conserve resources, and promote a more sustainable approach to product design. We’re proud to be leading the way in this effort and we hope that other companies will follow our example.

At Nordic Tales, we are proud to produce all of our glass in Europe, and we believe that this is an important decision for several reasons.

Firstly, by sourcing materials closer to home, we can significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation and logistics. This is an important step in our efforts to reduce our overall environmental impact and build a more sustainable business.

Secondly, producing glass in Europe helps ensure compliance with strict environmental and safety regulations. We take our responsibility to protect the environment and ensure the safety of our products very seriously, and by producing in Europe, we can ensure that our glass is manufactured in a responsible and sustainable way.

Finally, producing glass in Europe can help ensure greater supply chain stability and resilience. By sourcing materials locally or regionally, we can reduce our dependence on long and complex supply chains that are vulnerable to disruptions. This can help ensure that we have a reliable supply of high-quality glass, even in the face of unexpected events such as pandemics or geopolitical tensions.

We believe that these factors make producing glass locally or regionally an attractive option in order to build a more sustainable and resilient business.

Why Light
Matters

In recent years, Nordic Tales has been focusing on how light influences our wellbeing.

Some wavelengths have been proven to affect our hormone levels, thereby distorting our natural sleep patterns. Colors also appear differently under cold, warm, direct, or diffuse light.

Most of us have managed to solve the basics – we can move around our homes without bumping into furniture.

However, this is not the whole story…

Light plays a major role in how you look and feel. Soft light is generally considered more flattering to the face and body than hard light, as it diffuses hard shadows and softens your overall appearance. Hard light, on the other hand, renders colors more vividly, making it a good choice for your dining table.

Amongst filmmakers, it’s well acknowledged that atmosphere and proper light settings are deeply linked.

While no one would argue against music playing a profound role in how a situation is perceived, we postulate that light plays a similar, albeit more subtle, role.
